Caring For Leather Apparel So It Looks Like New

Posted on

If you have just purchased a motorcycle, chances are you will want to protect your skin with hardy material while battling forceful winds as you ride. Many people opt for leather jackets and chaps while riding their motorcycle as they protect the body from windburn while giving a traditional biker appearance. Caring for your leather motorcycle apparel is key in keeping it looking its best for years to come. Here are some tips to use in caring for leather so it stays intact and in great condition.

Taking Time To Clean

To keep your leather looking like new, take the time to clean it appropriately to remove any dust and grime from the open road. Clean your leather apparel after each outing you take on your bike. Wipe down your leather with piece of clean microfiber cloth using a mild detergent mixed with water. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove any dirt from seam areas. Afterward, use a dry piece of microfiber cloth to remove moisture from your clothing and allow it to air dry.

Conditioning Your Clothing

Wearing leather in an outdoor environment regularly will dry the material as it will endure the heat of sunlight, sporadic bouts with precipitation, and the impact of wind. To keep your clothing from drying out, it will need to be conditioned. It is important you do the cleaning procedure before conditioning, otherwise you will be trapping dirt under the conditioning agent after it is applied. Purchase a leather conditioner and use a clean piece of microfiber cloth to rub the cream into the material. Use your fingertips to apply the cream to areas that feel stiff. Your body heat will soften the leather, allowing it to absorb the conditioner a bit more easily. Wipe off any excess conditioner with your cloth. Conditioning your clothing every three or four months will keep it in a supple condition, making it fit your body more comfortably as a result.

Storing Leather Appropriately

When cooler weather requires you to store your motorcycle until springtime emerges, you will want to do the same with your leather so it remains in great condition for the following season. Place your leather in a cool, dry location away from risk of potential pests, direct sunlight and moisture. Many people opt to place their leather in a plastic storage container with a lid. This will keep your leather completely dry and away from any rodents or insects. Set your clothing in the tub without folding as this can leave permanent creases if temperatures fluctuate in your home.
